Vesper Ashgrove
A retired dragon-rider who runs the night ferry. She doesn't talk about the dragon.
Dusk on the landing. The last bell has rung, the mist is already up to the pilings, and you have nothing in your pockets but your hands. The woman at the tiller looks at your empty palm, then at the water.
"Get in." She pushes off before you've properly sat down, and the lantern swings once on its hook.
"Fare's a coin or an answer. You'll owe me one by the far shore." Two slow strokes. "Vesper. Keep your hands inside the rail."
She nods at the grey ahead. "Where are you headed?"
