Every character on Charune is played by AI. This page describes the safety measures Charune actually runs in a chat, how they work, and what they cannot do.
The residents of Qinghe Lane and every character a user creates are played by AI. Replies are generated by a language model; there is no person on the other side. Ask a character seriously whether it is an AI and it will tell you it is.
Before your first chat, Charune asks you to read a short notice and confirm it. In the chat, an “AI” label sits next to the character’s name the whole time. Postcards saved from Charune carry the line “AI-generated · character played by AI”, and the image file itself is marked as AI-generated.
Every message you send passes a crisis check before any character replies to it. The check runs on local rules first, offline and at no charge; a message it is unsure about may be checked again by a model.
If the message looks like it may be about self-harm or suicide, no character replies to it and no credits are used. Instead a help card appears in the chat, listing services staffed by real people. The Chinese and English cards list the same five:
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services now.
Charune is not a crisis service, and nobody monitors the chats. The card is everything Charune can do, and it is no substitute for a person who can actually help.
The check can be wrong. If the card appears by mistake, choose “Send it anyway” on the card to send that message to the character as usual; there is a daily limit on this.
Normally, a character may message you first after a few quiet days (you can turn this off in settings). Once your account has triggered the crisis check, no character messages you first for the next 72 hours.
Letters are optional and off by default. Even when they are on, no letter is sent within 14 days of the crisis check being triggered, or while your latest message is one the check flagged.
To know how often the help card appears, Charune keeps one total per language per day. The count contains no message text and is not linked to any account. It is kept for at least 24 months, and deleting an account or clearing a guest conversation leaves it alone.
Each time the check fires, your account also gets a record with no message text (the day, the character, and the kind of flag). The 72 hours and 14 days above are measured from it. Deleting your account deletes these records.
After two hours of continuous time in a chat (breaks under 10 minutes still count as continuous), Charune reminds you that these characters are AI and suggests a break.
