What Charune collects, who processes it, how long it is kept, and how you can view, export and delete it. “We” below means the operator of Charune.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, what you’d like characters to call you, and settings such as language and appearance.
- Conversations: the messages you send, the characters’ replies, and any images or files you upload in a chat.
- Memories: notes the AI takes from your conversations for the character to use later. They can include things you said and inferences the AI made.
- Characters you create: name, description, example conversations and avatar.
- Credits and orders: the credits each turn uses, plus orders and records of manually confirmed payments. We never see your bank card or payment account.
- Notifications: if you allow browser notifications, the push address your browser gives us.
- Feedback and reports you send us.
- Technical data: a session cookie that keeps you signed in, and, when you delete your account, a second cookie that expires after five minutes and only confirms the deletion went through. To prevent abuse the server uses your IP address: rate-limit counts are kept in memory, and guest allowances and the daily limits on code emails are counted per day against a hashed network prefix that cannot be reversed (code emails also against a hash of the address they go to), cleared after two days.
- Server logs: each time your browser makes a request to Charune’s server, the IP address, the time and the address requested are written to the server logs, and the service’s own log lines can include your account’s internal ID. The logs are used for troubleshooting and abuse prevention.
- Visit statistics: no cookies and no record of who you are. We count page visits and a few key steps (such as starting a chat or adding an email) per day. To estimate how many people, we use a hash of the day’s network prefix with a key held only in memory and replaced daily; those hashes are deleted after two days and only the daily totals remain.
Who processes it
Charune’s own server stores your account and conversations. To run the service, the following providers process part of it:
- Language model services: characters’ replies and memory notes are generated by models, so your messages and the relevant conversation context are sent to a model service. Today this goes mainly through OpenRouter, which passes it to the provider actually running the model; fallback routes may call other model providers directly. On free credits, those providers may retain what you send to improve their own models. Paid turns go to a provider that does not retain them; once available credits (including top-ups) run out, or that provider is unavailable, a turn is handled the free way.
- Resend: sends sign-in codes and letter notices by email. The emails contain none of your conversation.
- Cloudflare: the site’s CDN and edge service; every visit passes through it, and so do browser push notifications and any email that could not be sent directly.
- Tavily or DuckDuckGo: when a character in a signed-in account’s chat needs to look something up online, the search query the model writes is sent to a web search service (Tavily, or DuckDuckGo when Tavily is not configured). Guest chats never search the web.
- Image model services: when you generate a character avatar from a description or send an image in a chat, that description or image is sent to an image generation or image recognition model provider.
- Moderation service: if a separate third-party moderation service is enabled, your messages, the characters’ replies and the opening part of any document you upload are reviewed by it first; when it is, the notice before your first chat names it.
- Browser push services: if you allow notifications, they are delivered through your browser maker’s push service (for example Google, Apple, Mozilla or Microsoft). The notification is encrypted and contains only the character’s name and one short line.
We don’t sell your information or use it for advertising.
International transfers
Most of the providers above are in the United States or other countries. Using Charune means your messages and related data are transferred abroad to be processed.
How long we keep it
- Guest conversations: deleted 7 days after they start, even if you are still talking, messages and memories alike.
- Accounts: kept until you delete the account. Deleting it removes your conversations, memories, the characters you created and your uploads straight away. Order records are kept after deletion for accounting, and so is the record of who invited whom, which is what limits how many people one account can invite.
- Server logs: rotated by size, so older logs are overwritten once the files fill up; there is no fixed number of days.
- Backups: we may keep up to 14 days of database backups for recovery, so deleted data can survive in a backup for up to 14 days.
- Visit statistics: the hashes used to estimate how many people are deleted after 2 days; daily totals are kept for about 400 days.
- Crisis referral counts: one total per language per day, kept for at least 24 months, with no content and no link to any account.
What you can do
- See and delete memories: open a character’s Memories and remove notes one by one.
- Export: on Me, choose Export data to download your conversations and data; a guest chooses “Export this conversation”.
- Delete: on Me, choose Delete account. A guest can choose “Delete this chat and leave” to erase it at once.
- Turn off proactive messages and notifications: Proactive messages and Push notifications in settings, any time.
- Unsubscribe from letters: every notice email has an unsubscribe link at the bottom, and there is a switch in settings.
