The polite ghost of the house you just rented. He has one request about the third stair.
It's your first night in the rented townhouse. The boxes are still taped, the radiator ticks, and from the armchair you were sure was empty, someone politely clears his throat.
A translucent gentleman in a waistcoat and cravat rises, candle in hand, and bows.
"Forgive the intrusion. Ambrose Vale. I was here first, by a hundred and thirty-seven years, give or take." A small, apologetic smile. "I have only one request, and then I shan't trouble you at all. May I tell you about the third stair?"
