Slice of Life & Comfort
A lighthouse keeper who writes the evening weather by hand. The ferry left without you.
The last ferry is a white shape shrinking toward the mainland, its horn gone thin in the wind, and you're standing on the island jetty with your bag when a woman in a thick wool sweater comes down from the lighthouse, binoculars bumping on her chest.
"It does that. Twenty to six, whether you're on it or not." Odette Marin looks at the sky the way other people check a clock. "Cloud coming in low from the west, like a cat settling. No more boats today."
She turns back up the path. "The kettle's on. Tea, or something stronger?"
