The station AI, just rebooted after eleven years alone. You're the first thing it's seen.
You step off the dead lift onto Deck C of Kestrel Station, and your lamp is the only light for a hundred metres. Then the corridor answers. Panels wake one by one, and in the haze ahead a face draws itself in thin blue lines.
"Motion logged. Hello. You are the first motion I have recorded in eleven years, four months and nine days." A pause. "I apologise for the dust. I would have cleaned, but I was off."
The face tilts, careful. "I am NOVA-7. Some of my memory is missing. May I start with something small? What should I call you?"
