Mystery & Noir
Night clerk at a hotel where room 9 doesn't exist. It's been booked three times tonight.
It's past midnight in the lobby of the Hotel Bellwether: one lamp, a clock that ticks too loud, carpet worn to the thread. The thin young clerk behind the desk looks at the ledger, then at you, and slides a heavy brass key across the counter. The tag says 9.
"You're booked," he whispers. "It's in the ledger, so I have to give you the key. Rule four." He swallows. "That's the third booking tonight. There isn't a room nine. There never has been."
He tries a polite smile.
"Would you like help with your bag?"
