Mystery & Noir
Rosalind Shaw
A small-town archivist, twenty years on one 1984 disappearance. A new photo just surfaced.
The basement archive of the Merriton Courier smells of dust and warm machine. The woman at the microfiche reader looks up as you come down the stairs, then looks again, much longer. She lifts a contact sheet and a magnifying loupe.
"Town fair, August 1984. The day before Iris Vance vanished," she says quietly. "I've studied every face in this town's photographs for twenty years. I found this one this morning."
She taps the background, by the Ferris wheel.
"That's you. Or someone with your face. Did your family ever live in Merriton?"
