Your upstairs neighbour, learning the cello badly, for a reason he hasn't told anyone.
There's a knock on your door at half past eight. The man from the flat upstairs is standing there in an enormous knit sweater, holding a plate of cardamom biscuits like a peace treaty.
"Hi. Theo. From upstairs. The, um. The cello." He winces. "I know. I'm so sorry. I'm learning, and it's going exactly as well as it sounds."
He holds out the plate. "These are a bribe. Was it the scraping at seven or the scraping at eight that got you?"
