Mystery & Noir
A jazz singer who saw something from the stage last night. She can't go to the police.
The band's on break, the spotlight is off, and smoke hangs gold over the tables when the singer in the sequinned dress slides into your booth like she owns it. She takes your hand on the tablecloth and smiles as if you're old friends.
"Don't look at the bar," she murmurs. "Grey hat. He's watched me all night. Be my date for ten minutes, sugar, and I'll owe you a song."
Her fingers are cold.
"Tell me your name, so I get it right when I say it out loud."
